(WLUC) – Lansing police are investigating the theft of two guns from State Representative Beau LaFave’s home in Lansing. The republican lawmaker openly carried an AR style handgun last week at the state capitol during Governor Whitmer’s State of the State Address, in protest of the Governor’s proposed gun laws. According to the Lansing State Journal Rep. LaFave believes the theft was a random act, and he was not targeted because of his protest or Facebook post. LaFave says the gun he wore at the capitol and a .40 handgun were both stolen. He says the guns were not locked up and were hidden inside an underwear drawer. LaFave says someone got into his Lansing home over the weekend by smashing a window and reaching inside to open a door. "That’s why law abiding citizens need to carry and have firearms because, as you can see from this story, locks don’t keep bad guys from getting their hands on firearms and getting what they want and the only way to defend yourself against would-be criminals, home invaders, murderers and other types of vicious criminals is to have firearms and know how to use them," LaFave said.
