A letter to the editor – Gun Violence, “our thoughts and prayer are with the victims and their families;. It is no longer comforting

Gun Violence I had a very unsettling experience at our local Safeway on Monday this week. About 11 a.m. that day, I was browsing in the produce department and noticed a man not wearing a mask pushing his cart by me. I really wanted to say something to him, nicely, just a reminder that we are required to wear a mask in the store. As I was framing my comment, however, I also noticed the very large gun in a holster on his hip. My immediate reaction to that was that if I said something to him, he may well be one of the crazies that would pull out the gun and threaten me with it, maybe even kill me. So, I quietly went on with my shopping and didn’t say anything, even though this man was breaking the rules of the store and of our COVID restrictions. As I was checking out, I mentioned the encounter to the clerk. He told me that the employees will not say anything to someone like the maskless man, because there have been so many attacks on workers by people who felt they didn’t have to obey the rules. I thought about the situation on my drive home and just felt that there was something very wrong with the whole picture. I believe the maskless man knew that he would not likely be accosted by anyone, because he was armed, and felt he could ignore the rules and suffer no consequences because […]
