American fundamentals and the right to bear arms: Letters Re “ Making gun rights fundament of our law ” (Susan Shelley, Feb. 10): It amazes me that the Republican Party, which is predominantly pro-life from conception to natural death, is also the party that so vehemently opposes repeal of the Second Amendment. The Second Amendment was instituted “for a well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state.” “The right to keep and bear arms was precious to men who faced dangers of many kinds in their daily lives … and was usually the pioneer family’s only protection against wild animals and prowling (gasp) Indians.” (World Book Encyclopedia) Guns may have been invented to protect, and if needed, kill animals and invaders, but in today’s civilized society guns kill the defenders of law and innocent people on the freeway or in their homes. I cringe when I see the display of weapons at sporting goods stores.
