Americans Will Be Able to Create 3D-Printed Guns in August — But Not if Chuck Schumer Can Help It

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) called for legislation to block a settlement that would allow Americans to download blueprints for 3D-printable guns. “I am sounding an alarm that come Aug. 1, America is going to get a lot less safe when it comes to the gut-wrenching epidemic of gun violence,” Schumer said , according to the New York Daily News. Schumer worried that the so-called firearms, which he called “ghost guns,” could “mimic the look and the capacity of a hardened, fully semi-automatic weapon.” 3D printing just made it even easier to get guns in America pic.twitter.com/1vehMYuv9L During a Sunday press conference, according to the New York Post, Schumer warned the printers could create a plastic AR-15. “This online site shows you, how at your home, with a simple 3D printer, you can make a plastic AR-15, an AR-10, a very dangerous semi-automatic assault-style weapons out of plastic in your own basement,” he said. Predicting that the settlement decision would “cost lives,” Schumer vowed to try to pass legislation that would block the blueprints if President Donald Trump’s administration went through with the settlement with Defense Distributed. Defense Distributed owner Cody Wilson, as IJR previously reported , first posted blueprints online on how to build a 3D-printed firearm back in 2013.
