An Antonin Scalia gun rights quote that should concern Cal Thomas | Letters

Cal Thomas in his column (”What the loss of liberties looks like,” April 14) quotes President Biden saying in reference to the Second Amendment, “No amendment is absolute.” Mr. Thomas says he finds that kind of talk “concerning.” Here’s a quote Cal Thomas should find super concerning: ”It (the Second Amendment) is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose.” That’s what the late Justice Antonin Scalia wrote in his majority opinion in District of Columbia vs. Heller , the case the Supreme Court used to affirm that Second Amendment protections are enjoyed by individual citizens, not just those in militias. But if Cal Thomas had ever read conservative Justice Scalia’s majority opinion, he’d know that nothing now in constitutional law precludes a president from looking at gun-show racks filled with military assault rifles, all for sale with no buyer background check, from saying enough already! It is interesting that a reader finds himself asking if Cal Thomas is from another planet (April 13). I guess everyone has a different perspective.
