Bill Townsend: Neguse will lead on stopping gun violence

Next year will mark the 20th anniversary of the Columbine shooting here in Colorado. I still remember the moment when I heard that news 20 years ago. Now having met the survivors’ families and seeing it repeated over and over again, there is no excuse for the lack of response by our elected leaders. Recently, I’ve wondered how this time will be perceived in history. Will we be judged a sick society in the future for not having the social cohesion to stop repeated slaughter of our children? This year’s election offers an opportunity to reverse two decades worth of stagnation. Here in our district for Congress is Joe Neguse, who is running on a strong platform of combating gun violence. Joe has been endorsed by former Congresswoman Gabby Gifford’s organization, Courage to Fight Gun Violence. Joe fought as a CU regent against concealed weapons on campus. Joe stood up at public hearings in support of the city of Boulder’s recently enacted assault weapons ban. As far as I know he is the only candidate who showed up in person to face the crowd of angry gun owners who intimated supporters of the ban. Joe is not new to this difficult issue. He has long recognized the need for change and has and laid out his platform on gun violence back in June of last year, calling for an assault weapons ban and an end to the "gun show loophole."
