Bitter Legacy Of The Second Amendment

Bitter Legacy Of The Second Amendment

Is gun violence an inescapable fact of modern America? The answer comes straight from the list of subjects not taught in American History classes. What was the worst nightmare of the Virginia slave owners who drafted the U.S. Constitution, the 2nd Amendment in particular? That some night all their black human property would rise up, throw off their shackles, and murder their owners in their beds, as had slaves in Haiti and Jamaica within living memory of American owners. To allay such fears, the American Constitution had to be altered to guarantee upstanding, God-fearing slave owners the right to protect themselves, to bear arms in the event of a black uprising. Slave masters had to be prepared to field militias strong enough to put down a general insurrection. This is how the guaranteed right to bear arms was born, out of fear and desperation, a lesson that American history classes are careful to avoid. – Peter Margolin, Brevard
