California recall candidate Kevin Kiley campaigns for governor at Redding rally

Republican Assemblyman Kevin Kiley received a rousing welcome during a campaign rally at Riverfront Park near the Sundial Bridge in Redding on Tuesday evening. Kiley is a former prosecutor from Rocklin who is one of 46 replacement candidates in the Sept. 14 recall election against Gov. Gavin Newsom. Around 200 people clapped several times for the candidate as they attended the rally where Kiley was introduced by fellow Assemblyman James Gallagher, R-Yuba City. During a speech and question-and-answer session afterward, Kiley criticized Newsom’s handling of the pandemic and his coronavirus-era restrictions, promoted self-government and backed Second Amendment gun rights, saying California has the worst gun laws of any state. Kiley said he sees himself more as a participant in a historic recall movement than a candidate for political office. “If California were to step forward and recall its governor, after this era where the government has had such great control of our lives, it would indeed send shock waves throughout our nation,” he said. The assemblyman also gave a shout-out to the State of Jefferson movement, saying he has “many great friends” who favor a 51st state. “The State of Jefferson is actually maybe getting at what is ultimately the core issue of this recall, which is returning power to the people,” he said.
