CAMANCHE— Camanche residents may have the ability to shoot off fireworks to celebrate on July 4, according to a proposed ordinance amendment. The Camanche City Council on Tuesday passed the first reading of an ordinance amendment that would modify the public health and safety ordinance and allow the use of consumer fireworks. Currently, under Iowa law, fireworks can be sold in cities, but it is up to city officials to decide when and if they can be lighted. If the council approves the second and third readings of the ordinance amendment, consumer fireworks deemed legal could be shot off from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. July 4. The proposed amended ordinance states no person, firm or corporation would be allowed to discharge or fire any cannon, bomb, pistol, air gun or other firearms, fireworks or any other device containing explosives. The fine for violating the ordinance would be at least $250. The Camanche City Council will consider a second and third reading of the ordinance at a future City Vouncil meeting.
