Cameron Smith: Biden’s gun restrictions have a Baltimore problem

This is an opinion column. In recent remarks on his gun violence prevention strategy, President Joe Biden highlighted Baltimore’s homicide track record as a driver for federal gun control legislation. In reality, the city clearly demonstrates that banning “assault weapons” and expanding background checks are solutions that fail to understand the problem. Baltimore has a significant homicide problem alongside some of the toughest gun laws in the country. According to David Collins, a reporter for WBALTV in Baltimore , the city “has recorded more than 300 homicides each year for the past six years” and is on pace to do it again this year. Baltimore routinely ranks among the cities with the highest homicide rates in the nation. From registration of handguns to magazine size restrictions to an “assault weapons” ban, Maryland has some of the most strident gun restrictions in America. Baltimore County adds a few more layers with respect to minors interacting with firearms and storage of firearms and ammunition. Biden and the gun control crowd view these realities as evidence that America needs more gun restrictions at the federal level. Maryland’s gun laws haven’t reduced crime in Baltimore, but Biden and many Democrats believe that expanding those laws nationwide will do the trick. It won’t work because the problems aren’t related to scary guns or paperwork. If there’s an immediate policy solution related to guns, it’s to target illegal gun trafficking.
