Candidates debate issues in state legislative race

(Janis McGowan) Candidates vying for the Republican nomination for the 124th Legislative District seat debated April 27 took part in the Free Pa Schuylkill Chapter debate at the New Ringgold Fire Company . The winner of the May 17 primary oppose Democrat Tina Burns in the Nov. 8 election. Rep. Jerry Knowles is retiring from the seat. More than 80 people attended the meeting. The debate was moderated by Joe Sterns, a member of the Schuylkill County FreePA chapter, and Ron Boltz of the Pennsylvania Liberty Alliance. The candidates are Jamie Barton, a resident of Orwigsburg and vice president of Jack Rich Inc, Elle Rulavage, a resident of Windsor Township who is studying for her doctorate in ministry, and Jill Saunders, a resident of Hamburg who is a Realtor. The candidates agreed on support for the Second Amendment. All said they are pro-life and favor school choice, elimination of property taxes, protecting voting rights and smaller government. Differentiating the candidates Barton noted his support of the education system and encouraged community involvement. “Pennsylvania is one of the highest taxed states in the country, we need to relieve the tax burden from small business,” Barton said, citing his experience as a businessman. “My guess is that everyone up here would agree with me — the difference is that I have lived it.” Rulavage, a single mom, stated her strong support […]
