Conservative wing of RI GOP raffling AR-15 to raise money for 2022 campaigns

PROVIDENCE — Rhode Island’s Republican Conservative Caucus is raffling guns — including an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle — to raise money to try to win more GOP seats in the state legislature. Second prize in the March 20 drawing is described as "a Mossberg .12Ga Pump action shotgun." The Conservative Caucus — motto: "Ocean State Culture, Done Right" — has launched the raffle at a time when gun control is gaining ground at the Rhode Island State House. On Thursday, the House leadership announced the latest push to prohibit the possession of firearms on school grounds and ban the sale and possession of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. The single largest obstacle to past action on these types of bills was then-House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello, a Cranston Democrat with a consistent "A” rating from the NRA, who lost his bid for reelection in November. Key members of new House Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi’s leadership team have "F” rankings from the NRA. The lead sponsors of this year’s gun-control package include new House Majority Leader Christopher Blazejewski and new House Majority Whip Katherine S. Kazarian. and Rep. Justine Caldwell. A General Assembly statement announcing the introduction of the 2021 House gun-control package said: "The legislation has broad support in the House, with more than half of the members of the House cosponsoring all the bills."
