Could new gun laws be passed in San Antonio?

SAN ANTONIO – An important discussion is underway among San Antonio city leaders looking for ways to address gun violence and safety. The City Council Public Safety Committee wants to create a new ordinance to help keep people safe. The mass shootings in Sutherland Springs and Santa Fe resulted in nearly 40-deaths and dozens of injuries. Two tragic events arguably too close for comfort. "When things like that happen it really makes us think twice," said District 7 Councilwoman Ana Sandoval. San Antonio’s Public Safety Committee is discussing several ideas that could become part of a new ordinance; to include zoning that restricts gun sales, similar to existing laws that prohibit the sale of alcohol near churches and schools. "Could we do something similar for gun sales," Sandoval said. Ana Sandoval is on the committee also considering making safe gun policies a requirement for companies in order to do business with the city, or receive economic incentives. "Maybe we have an agreement where if we buy services from you, that you have a safe gun policy," Sandoval explained. "The problem isn’t responsible gun ownership, the problem is the criminal activity," said District 6 Councilman Greg Brockhouse. Greg Brockhouse is the lone committee member who voiced opposition in the last meeting. "Because it doesn’t cure the problem," Brockhouse explained.
