Democratic candidates for governor dodge stricter gun laws to address school shootings

Kentucky’s primary elections are fast approaching. Here are the candidates running in the governor’s race. Wochit, Louisville Courier Journal National Democrats may be calling for stricter gun laws to combat the rash of school shootings plaguing the country, but three major contenders for Kentucky governor bypassed such proposals on Wednesday. Democrats Rocky Adkins, Andy Beshear and Adam Edelen each expressed heartfelt condolences during their fourth debate when asked how to address the 2018 shooting at Marshall County High School . Two 15-year-old students, Preston Cope and Bailey Holt, were killed while 14 others were injured. "I am committed to making sure this never, ever happens again," Beshear, the state’s attorney general, said. The son of former Gov. Steve Beshear said state legislators have to fund the physical safety of schools by reducing entrances. He also thinks more security inside the schools is necessary. "We’ve got to make sure there is a trained school resource officer in every single school to make sure they can respond if the worst of the worst happens," Beshear said. He said the proposal, which lacked any funding to implement the safety measures, is a good start for more metal detectors, safety cameras and mental health counselors.
