DeSantis has a duty to protect Florida's school kids amid COVID surge

Children are dying. This is indisputable. Many more likely will die. Already children’s wards and hospitals are virtually at capacity. The worst seems yet to come. Yet no matter what the cost Gov. Ron DeSantis stands firm, no doubt in the belief that his hardline stance on masks for children will lead him to a 2024 presidential nomination. Think about that. The governor is willing to risk the health and lives of, God forbid, hundreds of children in the state of Florida. I come from a religious tradition that states: “One who destroys a single life, it is attributed to that person as if they have destroyed an entire world.” The opposite is just equally valid: “One who saves a single life, it is attributed to that person as if they have saved an entire world.” Is the life of a single child worth the price? Apparently Gov. DeSantis thinks it is. Can we imagine even one parent agreeing with the governor if it happens to be their child’s life? An elected official who would knowingly sacrifice a life, especially a child’s life, for the sake of personal ambition is unworthy of the public office they hold. Let us consider the false and dangerous justification of the no-masking rule for the schools. Apparently this involves the pursuit of freedom, as if the requirement to wear a mask in school somehow violates a child’s or parent’s liberty. This is nonsense.
