East Dundee to get another gun range

East Dundee officials have approved a gun shop and indoor shooting range for the Terra Business Park. The shop, Trident Defense, operated by Tyson Cobb, is currently located at 555 Plate Drive and purchases and sells firearms as well as provides custom firearm-coating services. But Cobb wants to expand and add a 25-yard, three-lane shooting range as the business relocates to one of the two new commercial buildings going up as part of the Palumbo development. Trustees granted his special use permit request on July 9. The property, at 200 Christina Drive, is located in a designated M-1 limited manufacturing district, which allows for the operation of a gun shop and indoor shooting range under a special use permit. Prior to the vote, Trustee Kirsten Wood asked why Trident would compete with GAT Guns, one of the largest, privately-owned indoor shooting facilities in the country. It is located along the village’s Route 25 corridor. “Obviously GAT Guns is a huge part of East Dundee. I’m unclear on why two shooting ranges would be in such close proximity, especially one with a high clientele already,” she said. Trident officials said the shooting range will only make up a third of their business and will be geared toward pistols rather than rifles. One range will be available to the public.
