EDC officials plan to build indoor archery, gun range in Gun Barrel City

An indoor archery and gun range will be built in Gun Barrel City after economic development officials there agreed to use grants from the National Rifle Association and other organizations to help fund construction. “I will say that a gun range in Gun Barrel City is something we’ve always thought we should have,” Mayor David Skains said. Gun Barrel City Economic Development Corporation Vice President Jim Taylor “came up with this concept, which would be to build it and lease it to someone to operate. I think that is an excellent idea.” EDC officials could not be reached Wednesday. The project is expected to cost $2 million. Grant money will account for more than 75 percent of that, according to a press release. “It has been said that as many as 300 area Mabank ISD students participate in the archery program,” the press release shows. “Add to that adult hunters and target shooters, and interest seems significant. With the majority of MISD students living in Gun Barrel City, the GBC location should be most convenient to refine their skills in archery.” Skains agreed. “I think it will help promote responsible gun ownership and safety in guns and archery,” he said. “In today’s world, responsible gun ownership is of utmost importance. The 7,200-square-foot archery center will provide lanes up to 25 yards in distance to accommodate up to 22 archers at a time, according to the press release.
