Firing back with some follow up

Columnist It’s time once again for a little follow up on some of the columns I’ve written. “Hell hath no fury” like a gun lobby scorned! Whenever I have tried to propose some sensible gun-control measures, the hostility I evoke suggests that I too need an AR15. One respondent denounced me as a “communist.” As of today, two respondents — knowing I’m a retired Marine officer — have charged me with breaking my oath “to support and defend the Constitution.” I am reminded of Trump’s very own Rasputin, Stephen Miller, who once said, “the powers of the president to protect our country will not be questioned.” There are obviously gun lovers who believe the meaning and implications of the Second Amendment “will not be questioned.” Silly me! I rather thought the First Amendment gives me the right to question any provision of our Constitution and to second-guess the intentions of our Founding Fathers. My oath of office constrained me (I’m no longer on active duty) to support and defend the Constitution as a whole, not how any faction interprets any amendment to it. Constitutional amendments have been added and stricken before. The 18th Amendment prohibiting the manufacture, transportation, and sale of alcohol was rescinded by the 21st Amendment. Hence, I fail to see that our Second Amendment should be considered sacrosanct. I mention this because yet another respondent accused me of wanting to repeal the Second Amendment.
