Florida could become the next state to allow gun owners to open carry

LEE COUNTY, Fla. – Florida could become the next state that allows you to carry a gun out in the open. A new bill has been introduced by Republican Representative Anthony Sabatini, Dist. 32 that would make it legal to display a gun in public, and you would not need a permit. However, the bill may not have the support it needs to get passed in 2022. Florida currently requires a permit to carry a weapon and then it must be concealed. Even accidentally revealing it is a crime. However, Florida gun owners can legally carry a gun while fishing, hunting, or range shooting. John Dezendorf, who runs Fowler Firearms in Fort Myers, argues that gun owners want every advantage and every right they can possibly get. While he supports open carry he does have some concerns. “If you’re open carrying inside a store, and somebody wants to rob it they might take advantage of you first because you’re carrying the firearm,” Dezendorf explained. Gabriel Cartelli feels carrying a gun in public offers a sense of safety. “Let’s say if there was a shooting somewhere like in a barbershop and somebody was carrying a gun they could stop that threat before the cops even get there,” Cartelli said. Currently, 31 states allow people to openly carry a gun without a license and Jumirale Crumbly of Fort Myers said seeing people carry guns in public would make her feel unsafe.
