Former Nixa mayor, state senator Jay Wasson enters southwest Missouri's congressional race

Jay Wasson, former mayor of Nixa and state lawmaker for southwest Missouri, will be joining the race to represent the region in the U.S. House of Representatives. He’s the latest to announce he will vie for the 7th District seat, aiming to succeed Rep. Billy Long, who is running for U.S. Senate . He’ll go up against state Sens. Mike Moon and Eric Burlison , as well as Dr. Sam Alexander, for the Republican nomination. In a video ad announcing his run, Wasson pointed to his family’s longtime roots in Christian County and touched on popular issues among Republicans — frustration with Democrats in Washington, D.C., policy at the southern border and critical race theory in schools, among others. “I’ve had it,” Wasson said in the ad. “I’m mad as hell about what they’re doing to our country and our way of life.” He hadn’t planned to run for the seat until about three weeks ago, Wasson told the News-Leader, saying he was enjoying his retirement and “didn’t want anything to do with going to Washington.” But he pointed to recent spending proposals on Capitol Hill compounding his existing frustrations with current leadership.
