Forum recap: Florida House District 9 candidates on protests, schools, guns and abortion

USA TODAY NETWORK-Florida Capital Bureau Former Florida Democratic Party chair Allison Tant and past chair of the Florida Faith & Freedom Coalition Jim Kallinger are competing to be Tallahassee’s representative in the Florida House. Both pledge to advocate for state employees and more money for public schools if elected. But Tant, the Democrat, and Kallinger, a Republican, go in different directions on many other issues. In a cordial exchange during a recent online forum hosted by the Tallahassee Democrat and the League of Women Voters of Florida, the two discussed their positions and plans if elected in November. Here are excerpts, edited for space and clarity: If elected what would you do to protect Florida’s environment – specifically addressing climate change as part of that? Kallinger : I would explore ways that we engage the private sector and really encourage them to encourage the private sector to take the right steps. I know the incoming Speaker and the incoming Senate President, I know they have a lot of important proposals on climate change, and I would back those proposals as well. Tant : As a result of climate change we’re having far more, I believe, storms so I’m going to be focused on resiliency if I’m elected. That is something that is going to be a huge issue for me.
