GOP candidates talk tough in Sutherland

SUTHERLAND—A coalition of conservative challengers cruised the campaign trail Thursday night in Sutherland, complete with a country twang. Iowa Senate candidate Anthony LaBruna hosted and headlined the event at Sweeney’s Clubhouse. Zach Dieken and Tom Kuiper — who are running for the same seat in the Iowa House of Representatives — joined him. “We have to make the state House and state Senate both stay conservative. Those are our strongholds. We cannot get lazy right now,” LaBruna said. EllieMae hits the titular note of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” on Thursday, April 11, in Sutherland. Performances from country musician EllieMae Millenkamp bookended the trio’s stump speeches. The singer-songwriter, known professionally by her first name, EllieMae knew LaBruna from their college days. She appeared on NBC’s “The Voice” where she was chosen to be a member of Blake Shelton’s team in the fall of 2019. Between EllieMae’s original songs and renditions of classic lyrics, the three Republicans spoke for a few minutes each about their candidacy for the Iowa Legislature.
