(AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin) WASHINGTON — As the Supreme Court weighs a ruling on Texas’ new abortion law after Monday’s oral arguments, an unlikely ally is throwing its weight behind the law’s opponents: gun rights advocates worried that Texas may have come up with a way for states to nullify constitutional rights with impunity. “It takes little in the way of creative copying for States hostile to the Second Amendment—New York, California, New Jersey, Hawaii, etc.—to declare that the ownership or sale of a handgun is illegal … and set up a bounty system with the same unbalanced procedures and penalties adopted by Texas in this case,” the Firearms Policy Coalition, a California-based nonprofit that defends gun rights laws, warned justices in a friend of the court brief. SB 8 offers court judgments of at least $10,000 to anyone who successfully sues a doctor or anyone else who “aids or abets” an abortion once embryonic cardiac activity can be detected. That’s around six weeks into the pregnancy.
