According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, there were 76,000 guns registered in New York state last year. That’s about four per capita, the lowest rate in the country. There are also many unregistered guns in circulation. Women gun owners have been on the rise since 2005. At the Saraspa Rod and Gun Club, about 50 percent of people taking permit and safety classes are female. Instructors say once a woman sees she’s not alone, the camaraderie takes away the fears and practice makes perfect. The number of women with a license to carry is also increasing. However, the guns shouldn’t be used without proper training and practice. The Saraspa Rod and Gun Club runs their women’s league on Wednesday nights. When researching this story, NewsChannel 13 checked with several other Capital Region gun clubs and shooting ranges and they all say the same thing — female membership and interest continues to grow.
