Gun shops limited to three areas in Newton: The Street, Rumford Ave., North St.

Gun shops can now open in limited locations in the city, rather than throughout Newton, after councilors on June 2 approved restrictive zoning in an overwhelming vote of 23-1. The zoning will go into effect 20 days from the council’s approval if Mayor Ruthanne Fuller signs it. Before June 2, there was no zoning for retail firearm businesses in the city. Now they will be able to apply for a special permit to open in three locations. “It unquestionably protects Newton,” Councilor-at-Large Josh Krintzman said.. Since Newtonville is not one of the zoned locations, Newton Firearms, a business in the process of getting the proper permits, will not be able to open at 709 Washington St. The city is also weighing a total ban on gun shops and will hold a public hearing June 21 (time to be determined). If a total ban is enacted, that would supersede the restrictive zoning.
