Harris to promise ban on imports of some high-powered guns if elected: report

Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) will announce Wednesday that if elected president she will ban high-capacity AR-15 style assault weapons, an ambitious proposal that adds to a slate of gun control measures endorsed by the California senator. A senior campaign official told Reuters that Harris will make the announcement Wednesday at a campaign stop in New Hampshire. Harris’ campaign did not immediately return a request for comment from The Hill on her plans for the day. Harris’ campaign aide reportedly told the news service that her plan will draw on research conducted by former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush in order to effectively institute a constitutional nationwide ban that is not jeopardized by legal challenges. Her reported proposal is a step further from measures the Democratic 2020 contender announced at a CNN town hall last month, when she endorsed a measure requiring retailers who sell more than five guns per year to conduct background checks on buyers, as well as penalties and fines for gun sellers and manufacturers. She has also pledged to demand gun control legislation from Congress due within her first 100 days in office, while revealing that she herself is a gun owner and distancing herself from what she called a "false choice" on the issue.
