Here’s what the state Senate candidates say about guns and gun control

Lynwood Lewis and Willie Randall are candidates for the Democratic nomination in Virginia’s 6th Senate District. Virginia Beach voters will head to the polls Tuesday to pick a candidate from each party to represent them in the state Senate. About 136,000 residents live in the 7th Senate District, which represents the western part of the city. Both parties will hold a primary in that district Tuesday. Another 3,000 Beach residents live in the 6th Senate District, which has a Democratic primary. In the wake of the shooting in Virginia Beach, The Virginian-Pilot asked all the candidates for their positions on gun control. The election will happen four weeks before a special General Assembly session called by Gov. Ralph Northam to propose gun control measures. Republicans have said they’ll propose more mandatory minimum sentences for gun-related crimes. For candidates’ views on other issues, click here . Carolyn Weems, Virginia Beach School Board member In lieu of a response to a series of questions, Weems issued a statement saying she was disappointed the governor “decided to interject politics into this tragedy.” She pointed to her 17-year record on the Virginia Beach School Board of “keeping students safe” and noted that Beach Police Chief James Cervera said “no new law” would have prevented the Municipal Center shooting. “Soon, we need to have a serious discussion about mental health,” she said.
