Illinois facing FOID card delays, new law will help clear backlog

FOID card. (WICS) SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WICS/WRSP) — Illinois now has a plan to fix Firearm Owners Identification card delays and backlogs. It’s a hold-up that gun owners like Luke Gerding have been facing since December 2019. “Because of this delay in FOID cards, I can’t purchase a firearm right now“Luke Gerding who’s waiting for a FOID Card said. “To me, it’s like an infringement on my second amendment right because they’re not processing it and I’ve been stuck in limbo.” Illinois residents like Gerding are not alone, others have also been waiting for months. “I applied for my FOID Card in February 2021, they told us it shouldn’t take long since I paid my fee online, and to date which is the third of August, I haven’t received any correspondence from the state of Illinois,” Charles Edwards an Illinois resident said. But House Bill 562 that was signed into law on Monday by Governor JB Pritzker is meant to upgrade how FOID cards are processed and renewed. In the bill, when a gun owner buys a firearm their FOID card will be automatically renewed. Also, if fingerprints are added FOID cards will last a lifetime. Officials say these small changes will be a game-changer. “There will be a lot of problems online or anything like that but this will be automatic,” Richard Pearson, Executive Director for the Illinois State’s Rifle Association said.
