'Insane' gun bills must be stopped in PA

The statewide Common Agenda to End Gun Violence Coalition led by CeaseFirePA secured a huge win in the state budget — $30 million in new grant funding for community violence prevention programs. Although it is a far cry from the $100 million requested, the grant is a victory for advocacy and we at the Women’s Advocacy Coalition are heartened by it even as we recognize that gun violence requires more than dollars. If the legislature can recognize the need for gun violence prevention through community programs, why can they not recognize the other piece of the problem: the proliferation of guns in our communities? The coalition pleads with lawmakers to recognize the other piece needed to stem the carnage in our communities: sensible gun-safety policies. Still languishing in committees are three logical proposals: Universal Background Checks, Extreme Risk Protection Orders (which are vital in preventing suicides and domestic violence), and Reporting Lost and Stolen Guns. Gun advocates claim that they have unfettered rights to buy any type of weapon, as many as they like and carry them any place they choose. This is an insane argument refuted by Justice Scalia in the Heller decision : “Like most rights, the Second Amendment right is not unlimited.
