‘It’s absolutely terrifying’: California State Senator Scott Wiener speaks on the Texas abortion law

The U.S. Supreme Court last Wednesday allowed a Texas law to remain in effect that bans abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy — before many women even know they’re expecting. Enforcement will not be done by the state, but by private citizens who can sue anyone they believe is helping a woman get an abortion — even someone who drives a woman to a clinic. If the Supreme Court allows the law to stand, it’s likely other conservative states will pass similar laws. While Gov. Gavin Newsom has said the state of California would “ensure that women continue to have access to critical health care services, including abortion,” many Golden State residents may be wondering what other legislators are thinking. We checked in with California State Sen. Scott Wiener, who represents San Francisco, Daly City, Colma and parts of South San Francisco, to find out what he’s thinking about all of this. SFGATE: How are you feeling about what unfolded in Texas? Sen. Scott Wiener: It’s absolutely terrifying. We have a state that is brazenly ignoring Roe vs. Wade and effectively banning abortions — and the U.S. Supreme Court is letting Texas get away with that.
