James A. Marples letter: Training essential for safe gun carry

Longview Having family in Abilene and other parts of Texas, I know that I want to protect them or myself, in the event of danger. However, I read the article "Legislature gives final approval to bill allowing Texans to carry handguns without a permit" (Reporter-News, May 18). I am a strong supporter of gun rights and believe staunchly in our Second Amendment Rights to keep and bear arms as private citizens. However, I have a Texas Concealed Handgun License (CHL) and I also have a Utah Concealed Carry of Weapon (CCW) permit. Sadly, Utah abolished their requirement in April, and Texas is abolishing their law in May. Personally, I was glad to learn the laws (of both states) and have hands-on marksmanship target-practice by qualified instructors of both states. Even though a person may "otherwise be qualified to possess" a gun, doesn’t mean that they know the laws and have a cool head. I think permits and training is helpful. At least, my permits are still good for second and third forms of "photo identification." Yet, I still prefer a gun in the hands of a person with a cool head and comprehension of the laws. — James A.
