Kalamazoo County considers declaring gun violence a public health crisis, with resolution including stimulus funding

(Photo by Carlin Stiehl | MLive.com) Carlin Stiehl | MLive.com KALAMAZOO, MI — The Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners is considering declaring gun violence a public health crisis. The board held a committee of the whole meeting at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, with several agenda items, including the first reading of the resolution that includes spending a portion of the American Rescue Plan stimulus funds to help reduce gun violence. The proposal will await a final decision from county commissioners at a future meeting. If the resolution is approved as written, the Kalamazoo County board will establish a working relationship with other local municipalities, community partners and community members to establish an evidence-based public health response to address the underlying social, economic and systemic factors that promote gun violence, the resolution states. The county board would allocate funding for ongoing community violence intervention through allocations from the American Rescue Plan and the county general fund to ensure the sustainability of such intervention programs; and would direct county administration to give a bi-annual update to the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners on the progress of work performed pursuant to the resolution.
