Letter: Don’t let dog whistles drive decision-making

With the election season upon us it might be good to explore the topic of “dog whistles.” Don’t look for fido. Politically dog whistles are coded messages communicated through words or phrases commonly understood by a particular group of people. The most common dog whistle is “Make America Great Again.” It was designed to illicit a specific social and political response from a sector of society. It certainly had the desired effect. More dog whistles are witnessed in most Republican political ads lately: Protect your Second Amendment Rights. CRT. Woke. The Big Lie. These are a few of the whistles designed to prevent a voter from looking further at a candidate and questioning the legitimacy of their intentions. The big one is the MAGA whistle. MAGA assumes a lack of greatness and a need to return to a previous time in history. What era would we prefer to own? Pre-vaccine? Free education? Equal rights? Pre Google? The second amendment assumes a real pressure on gun rights that has never existed. CRT (Critical Race Theory) has never been taught in any elementary or secondary school setting. It is a theoretical construct going back 40 years and confined to graduate-level academia. A racist whistle. Woke is by definition to be alert to injustice in society. If you’re anti-woke you kind of have to ask yourself why. The Big Lie is that the current president is illegitimate.
