Letter: Richard Parker: Slavery no longer exists so we can repeal Second Amendment

Gun Rights

The United States is the only “civilized” country that allows unlimited possession of firearms, and the civilized world looks on aghast at the continual explosion of mass murders that occur in the United States. It is obvious that these massacres take place here because guns are easy to acquire and abundant. The excuse used by the National Rifle Association for allowing the possession of death-dealing weapons in the United States is that this is a right protected by the Second Amendment. However, this amendment clearly states that the possession of firearms is related to a well-regulated militia. Unfortunately, a recent ruling by the Supreme Court effectively allows the possession of guns by everyone. Why is a militia necessary at all? No really civilized country needs an armed militia. But, back in 1791, shortly after this country was founded, slavery abounded, and a militia was considered necessary protection against slave rebellions, a constant threat in pre-Civil War America. As slavery is no longer permitted in the United States, it is no longer necessary to provide protection against slave rebellions. Therefore, the way to bring the United States into modern times is to repeal the Second Amendment. Richard Parker, Wakefield
