Letter to the Editor: Prosecute gun violators with current laws

Last week’s shooting in Boulder, Colorado, was another senseless killing that has unfortunately become too common in modern America. Unfortunately, the left weaponizes this for political retribution against law-abiding citizens. This is wrong. Making new laws that infringe on our Second Amendment rights only emboldens bad people like the shooter in Boulder. Criminals don’t obey the law. Instead of passing new laws that won’t stop the next mass shooting, the government needs to prosecute gun violators with laws it currently has. In 2018, according to the FBI, over 99,000 firearm background checks were denied because the buyer was legally barred from buying a gun. However, of those 99,000 denials, only 15,000 were prosecuted. It’s already illegal for anyone convicted of a crime and imprisoned for more than a year to possess or own a firearm. If someone is addicted to drugs or has an adjudicated mental health problem, if they’ve been convicted of domestic violence, are an illegal alien, or have been dishonorably discharged from the military, then they’re banned from owning, buying, or possessing any kind of firearm. If they try, they should be prosecuted. Where has our Congressman Bob Gibbs been in this? He should be defending the rights of the law-abiding citizens he represents in Congress. We taxpayers sent him to Congress to be our voice. Congressman Gibbs hasn’t spoken up for us, and we have no voice on the national stage defending our rights.
