Letter to the editor: Rep. Gibbs has lost touch with reality

In May, the Justice Department issued a proposal aimed at closing regulatory loopholes that allow individuals to buy gun-making kits known as ghost guns. These guns are unregulated firearms that anyone — including minors and prohibited purchasers — can buy and build without a background check. When the proposal was announced, U.S. Rep. Bob Gibbs sent a letter of protest to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives claiming, “These regulations hinder the development ability of manufacturers to produce new firearm designs or improve upon features of previously designed firearms. This proposed rule is just another example of the Biden administration’s attempt to eliminate law-abiding citizens’ Second Amendment rights by furthering government overreach over the U.S. firearm industry.” What Gibbs failed to address is 1) As noted, ghost guns are unregulated firearms that anyone, including minors and prohibited purchasers, can buy. 2) The Justice Department proposal would also require manufacturers to include a serial number on the firearm “frame or receiver.” Without such numbers, it prevents law enforcement agencies from tracing a weapon back to a crime. This is just another case proving Gibbs has lost touch with reality, and in this case, his own reality. Gibbs was one who took an active role in spreading the election “Big Lie,” which thereby contributed to the Jan. 6 insurrection.
