Letter to the editor: Time to put restrictions on guns

Despite the anticipated response from the hardliner Second Amendment supporters, I felt compelled to write this letter. First of all, I am a senior male, white, non-veteran and a gun owner. I have several firearms, including two handguns, a .22 Magnum derringer and a S&W 357 Magnum revolver, both of which are used for self protection. I also own a .22 rifle which I use for target shooting and the dispatch of rodents. I also own a 12 gauge shotgun used for turkey hunting. Lastly, I possess a 308 semi-automatic rifle and a 32 special rifle, which are used for deer hunting. I do not own an AR-15 type rifle which is used primarily to kill people. It is time we incrementally restrict Second Amendment rights. I believe we should begin with the ban on all AR-15 type weapons and the sales of bump stocks. The U.S. government should then do a buyback program on all AR-15 and bump stocks. Following a period of time, say six months, it will become a felony to possess these items. Granted, restricting Second Amendment rights is a slippery slope, but not unprecedented, as in 1986, Congress banned the sale of automatic weapons. Too many lives have been lost to AR-15 type weapons. It is time for Congress to act. How do you control members of Congress; by using the power of voting. Let us reach out to our congressman on this issue.
