Letter: Who could resist?

Some days reading the Monitor letters is challenging. Take Saturday, March 29, for example. First, there’s Ken Barnes’ letter on the second amendment which, in a dense thicket of prose, claims that the second amendment will be stricken from the Bill of Rights by a bunch of “oligarchs” (huh?) and “their Marxist allies” (um…what?) who now control the government. Furthermore, gun ownership is a “natural right endowed by omnipotence” (really?) I respect Mr. Barnes’ right to state his opinion but some research and facts would have been helpful here. Then there’s Bill Bunker’s latest attack on all things “Left” and Democrat, arguing that Biden is a weak-kneed president for not facing up to malignant international enemies and creating a potential blood bath in Afghanistan by withdrawing troops. Mr. Bunker conveniently forgets that Trump initiated the withdrawal from Afghanistan, not President Biden. Also, Trump failed to confront a dangerous North Korea and a Russia bent on our destruction, commenting regularly that he had a “good relationship” with both of their leaders. Talk about weak-kneed. And, finally, my former colleague and basketball buddy Mike Moffett’s “My Turn” piece makes a good case for celebrating American “exceptionalism,” only to ruin it all by claiming there is now a culture in America of “self-loathing residents who go out of their way to denigrate America and misstate our history.” Who’s to blame? “(A)cademia, the popular media, scheming Marxists and the Democratic Party.” Mike, do you think these were the people who assaulted the Capitol […]
