Letter: Young people must react to gun violence

To the editor: Another day, another angry male shooting up another school in another state within the U.S.A. You know, the country with the laxest gun laws in our entire western hemisphere, held in bloody place by the National Rifle Association, the Republican politicians in Washington whose reelection campaigns depend on the generosity of that organization, and the voters who vote for these politicians. And, despite the grisly litany of pain and death occurring seemingly weekly, oftentimes in schools populated by our youth adding to the poignancy of all those casualties, conservatives show no signs of doing a thing about the latest tragedy. Meanwhile, NRA adherents continue their routine, oft-used spin about “guns don’t kill people, people kill people” and the rest of the glossing over that so many Americans subscribe to. The only twist is this time the perpetrator is a 17-year-old who actually stole weapons (a 38 caliber revolver and shotgun) from his father’s store hold, unlike the usual scenario having a guy who never should’ve been able to purchase any kind of weapon doing his murdering with his own AR-15s or whatever weapons de jour he purchased. Now Dimitrios Pagourtzis takes his place alongside Dylann Roof, James Holmes, Adam Lanza and so many others on their ever-lengthening list. santa Fe High School is the latest location reeling and mourning, and won’t be recovering for a long time.
