Letters for May 19: Newport News shipyard makes a turnaround

Re “ No lines, no fevers with Newport News shipyard temperature checks ” (May 11): I am encouraged and optimistic about the new normal for our region’s shipbuilders. Newport News Shipbuilding is setting an excellent example of how institutions can make adjustments and operate during the COVID-19 pandemic. Cutting back from three shifts to two, encouraging employees to stay home when they are sick, wearing masks and taking temperatures at the turnstiles upon entry seem to be paying off. Hopefully other large organizations will follow suit. I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to Newport News Shipbuilding for its support of our community and for being a leader in COVID-19 best practices. Re “ Use the whole quote ” (Your Views, May 9): Citizens certainly have a right to own guns, a right guaranteed by the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. I challenge every citizen to look closely at the entire wording. The right to own firearms is based on the ability and responsibility to be a part of a militia if the powers that be deem it necessary. Before and during the Federalist era of our history, when we defeated the British for our independence and we drew up a set of laws to live by called the U.S. Constitution, we depended on civilian soldiers to insure and preserve our victory.
