Why should it apply here? Gun violence is a serious issue in our country. There is no simple solution to counter this epidemic, but there are some commonsense steps that can be tried that do not violate second amendment ownership rights. That is the thinking behind I-1639, a citizen’s initiative that was passed by 60 percent of the voters in the state of Washington. Now it is being opposed by many people who didn’t even bother to vote or who were in the minority. There are legitimate means to do this—either challenge it in court or spend the money to fund your own initiative. In the meantime, it is the law of the land, just as is the second amendment to the Constitution that was approved by nobody in Klickitat County! Some have made the farcical claim that I-1639 was passed by the western part of the state and so shouldn’t apply to Klickitat County . Following this reasoning, may I point out that the issue carried in the west end of the county (Bingen, White Salmon , North White Salmon , and Fruit Valley). So, might we reasonably expect then that the sheriff will see fit to enforce the law in our region? Or is support for the majority only provided unevenly?
