Letters: Proposed 'permit-less carry' laws a step towards end of responsible gun ownership

Gun violence continues to devastate communities in Florida, yet gun extremists are intent on pressuring lawmakers to hold a special session to hear a dangerous permit-less carry bill. The proposed gun legislation would remove all regulations on who is allowed to carry a loaded firearm in our state. The gun lobby has strategically branded the legislation “constitutional carry,” but let’s get real and call it what it is: “permit-less carry.” It’s not unreasonable to require a background check and basic training to safeguard who can carry a deadly weapon. We, as a collective society, have agreed that certain requirements must be met to operate a motor vehicle, to fish or even to fly a drone. Bottom line: More guns with less accountability is a threat to public safety and more specifically, to our dedicated law enforcement professionals. Permit-less carry legislation is a step toward dismantling the culture of responsible gun ownership. Communities are bleeding, families are devastated by senseless gun violence and more people will needlessly die if we continue to allow politicians to value money from the gun lobby over our lives. Please reach out to Florida lawmakers and demand they put public safety first and stand against permit-less carry.
