Don’t stop at the Second Amendment I read the article about Tiverton’s decision to support the Second Amendment with pride. It is so wonderful that we have such patriotic citizens who wish to adhere to the Second Amendment. The second amendment reads, “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Unfortunately, our founding fathers were not far seeing enough to create laws that could be placed on a T-shirt. Sadly, the part of the law before the comma often gets ignored, but not by our friends in Tiverton. No. They have declared their support of the Second Amendment. The implications of this are vast. Basically, it will require every gun owner in Tiverton to join the Tiverton Militia. My problem is with the name. I am sure that the Tiverton Town Council will come up with a better name for this well-regulated guarantor of freedom. Perhaps the Tiverton Fusiliers? Or the Tiverton Foot? Prince Donald’s Own? Since it is a militia, I assume that it will want to take part in the monthly and annual training exercises of the Rhode Island National Guard. The best part is that, as a volunteer militia, they are not a burden on the taxpayer. They don’t even have to be paid. They bring their own weapons, food and uniforms.
