Americans deserve better Donald Trump is the president of the United States. He also is only the 45th president in our nearly 250-year history. It is incumbent upon our president to give the presidency the respect and honor it demands. Therefore, Trump is held to a higher standard than any challenger. A presidential challenger is tasked with trying to convince the American people that he or she has the necessary temperament to lead our nation and be an inspiration. Regarding the debate, both men failed in that task. Trump sullied the integrity of the presidency by being combative, argumentative and demeaning. We, the people, expect more from our president, which is to reassure, especially at our time of uncertainty with COVID-19, that he is in charge with a calm and steady hand. Joe Biden, being the former vice president, should have known better than to get drawn into the vortex of questionable behavior. Biden needs to show the American people that he can lead the nation and not exchange schoolyard taunts. Debate contestants do not need to exchange insults with each other to make their point. Reason and facts do work with maybe a dose of humility to make a point. Ronald Reagan, after a shaky first debate with Walter Mondale, essentially won the American people back to his side with a funny quip about his age.
