Letters to the Editor: Sept. 22 While we are all excited about casting a vote in the upcoming Nov. 3 presidential election, Fremont County voters would be well served by paying close attention to a contest further down the ballot — the race for District Attorney. This is a job that absolutely cannot be left to an amateur. I have lived in other parts of the country where the DA was either inexperienced or ill-suited for the job and the consequences of having the wrong person in a powerful position have been dramatic. I have seen a bad DA indict people as political favors, send an innocent man to death row, micromanage an office so intensely that it could not function, and assist police departments in shaking down motorists through abusive civil forfeiture actions. We never want to see any of that happen in southern Colorado. That is precisely why voters should keep Kaitlin Turner on the job as DA for the 11th Judicial District which serves Fremont, Chaffee, Park and Custer counties. Turner previously served as an attorney for the U.S. Bureau for Prisons and as a federal prosecutor before she was appointed as DA last year. And since taking that job, she has been endorsed by a majority of the elected sheriffs in the 11th Judicial District. This vote of confidence by local law enforcement is important to me as a voter.
