Long wait for pistol permits in Capital Region amid rise in applications, pandemic impacts

CAPITAL REGION (WRGB) Right now, three of the Capital Region’s major counties have a long waiting list for gun licenses! In all three counties, the wait for a pistol permit is already well into next year! This kind of boom is typical in election years, but CBS 6 is learning 2020 has been different! CBS 6’s Anne McCloy discovered why many people in our area feel more compelled than ever to exercise their second amendment rights. Lisa Alonzi is mom to adult twins Luciano and Gianluca. All three of them got their pistol permits in Albany County just before the pandemic. “I don’t believe in violence, in guns, but you have to have a way to protect yourself and I do now,” Alonzi said. And they’re relieved they did. “It was really eye-opening during the pandemic when everything shut down. People who wanted a pistol permit couldn’t go out and get one,” Luciano Alonzi said. Lisa’s brother owns an area gun store, but despite his influence she says she never had interest in owning a gun herself, and even considered them taboo. She says what changed her mind was the political climate heading into 2020. “What really pushed me to get the permit was the possibility of not being able to get it,” Alonzi said.
