Madison Fish and Game I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m getting tired of the phrase "record breaking gun sales." Every month brings a new record. April was no exception, but not by much. Maybe that’s a sign that things are slowing down. April was a record breaking month compared to the same month last year, but only by 1% from April 2020 which was about when all this started. If you’ve been trying to buy a specific gun you feel the pain. In many cases popular models are being bought the day they arrive in the store. Overall, there have been between 1.5 and 2 million NICS background checks each month (the only indicator of sales) since last March. The greatest number of gun sales in a year since records were kept was last year, 2020. The greatest quarterly number on record was in the first quarter of 2021. This started with fear that with the pandemic government couldn’t protect us, then expanded with civil unrest in the summer, then by the November election results, and now is being fueled by President Joe Biden’s gun control initiatives. And it’s not the usual culprits buying all the guns. Women have been a long growing demographic in the shooting sports and handgun market. Now national polls find that African Americans and Hispanics are increasingly buying handguns for self and home defense. A younger demographic, those 18 to 29 years old are also buying guns.
