March for Our Lives coming to Lakeland, Spano sets opposition

LAKELAND — A voter registration drive by March for Our Lives, the student-led movement organized after the Parkland shootings, is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Friday at Kryger Park north of the Lake Mirror apartment complex. “Join us to get people educated, registered, and motivated to vote!” the organization’s invitation states. “We’ll talk about how we need to rally our generation around saving lives this November and stand up to the NRA.” The invitation states that security measures, including bag checks and hand-held metal detection, will be in place. Gary Gross, spokesman for the Lakeland Police Department, said about 15 to 20 people are expected to be in the area trying to register residents to vote. As of Thursday afternoon, the students had not yet completed the required special event permit application required by the city. The movement is part of a statewide bus tour by March for Our Lives called “Road to Change” that has a primary mission to register young people to vote. About 20 students plan to visit all 27 congressional districts in Florida through Aug. 1. On Saturday, the group plans to be in Cocoa Beach. There also is a national tour that visits about 20 states.
