Michigan Capitol braces for first gun rights rally since open carry ban inside

A Second Amendment rally is planned for Thursday at the Michigan State Capitol — the first major pro-gun demonstration since new rules banning open carry inside the building took effect. The 12th annual Second Amendment March , coordinated with Michigan Open Carry, Inc. and Michigan Gun Owners, will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday on the east lawn of the Capitol grounds, featuring speeches by gun rights activists and lawmakers as well as vendors, an “ask an attorney” panel and live music. Skip Coryell, the founder of the march, expects about 500 people to attend, though 1,000 users had marked themselves as interested or goingon Facebook. He said the event tends to be smaller in non-election years. This year’s rally is the first since new rules banning open carry inside the building took effect. The Michigan Capitol Commission voted in January to ban open carry inside after the events of Jan. 6 at the U.S. Capitol and an increasing number of protests in Lansing where armed men entered the Capitol.
