Mike Rogers: Three things I’ll pursue to address gun violence

Mike Rogers Thank you for the opportunity to address your concerns regarding gun-violence in our community. Even before this terrible pandemic touched our community in the Great Mills School shooting and the Capital Gazette shooting, robbing us of the lives of Jaelyn Wiley, Austin Wyatt Rollins, Wendi Winters, Rebecca Smith, Gerald Fischman, Rob Hiaasen, and John McNamara respectively. I was in agreement with the American Medical Association who characterized the proliferation of gun-violence in American communities as a public health crises. It is most unfortunate that our politics have become so polarized that elected officials are unable to address this matter earnestly. I believe the issue of gun violence is multifactorial and will require solutions that address mental health, the prevalence of guns in our society, and public law regarding guns and ammunition. Currently, Congress will not allow the Centers for Disease Control to keep accurate databases regarding the number of deaths by gun violence and the surrounding circumstances. This barrier will have to be removed as well to apply evidenced-based solutions. The AMA estimates that 30,000 Americans die needlessly each year through some form of gun violence. Here are some of the common sense strategies that I will advocate: 1. Increased back ground checks and closing the gun show loophole. 2. Restrictions on the type of weapons and magazines available to the public.
